The
3-Day BMSI Daily Class Agenda
The Morning session
begins with an orientation to bloodless medicine. By exploring the fundamentals of
a BMS program you will understand the principles upon which a
program is established. Policies are outlined with focus on meeting
the JCAHO standards. Legal issues are defined with emphasis on
recent patient rights laws.
The Afternoon
session includes lectures
on physician relations, highlighting the importance of commitment
and competence within the physician team. Educating patients
on the challenges surrounding bloodless care is discussed in
a group setting. Students will participate in a wet lab highlighting
the perioperative services; including use of platelet gel, auto-transfusion
and acute normovolemic hemodilution.
On-site training
is a highly recognized BMS program in assisting the coordinator.
Spend the Morning
observing coordinators working together applying the principles
taught at the Institute. Visit the operating theater, interact
with anesthesiologists and perfusionists, surgeons, laboratory
medicine and other allied health care personnel.
The Afternoon session
concentrates on marketing your bloodless program. Learn how coordinators around the country educate
people regarding non-blood alternatives. The class will then
focus on pharmacology. You will review the numerous drugs being
used to minimize blood loss and rebuild lost RBCs. Afterwards,
there will be a discussion on HBO and severe anemia.
Resources and skills for dealing
with crisis situations are explored.
When patients, because of religious beliefs, refuse blood in
a life threatening situation, the coordinator must be trained
in proper intervention techniques. A brief review before lunch
will highlight the vital information presented during the previous
3 days.
In the Afternoon participants
will take a 100 question written exam.
To receive certification from BMSI they will need to successfully
pass the test.
In addition, each student
will receive a confidential one-on-one consultation with a BMSI faculty member. The consultation is designed
to identify the participants strengths and weaknesses and support
their specific goals. Students are trained to apply the program's
content to their personal, community and institutional goals
through good planning and implementation.
One significant feature
of the BMSI program is the ongoing off-site support provided each participant after attending the workshop.
When faculty members follow up with participants the likelihood
of their program succeeding is increased.
