How is "Blood Conservation" done?
Integrated Blood Conservation (IBC) programs use state-of-the-art technology and the latest scientific knowledge to care for patients without the use of donor blood. Some of the specialized techniques and equipment used are:

Advanced cell saver system -- is an extremely complex system that carefully conserves and recirculates blood which might otherwise be lost during surgery.
Meticulous surgical techniques -- require painstaking attention to minimize blood loss at all times.
Electrosurgical coagulator -- is a sophisticated tool that has been used for many years to limit internal bleeding by clotting the patient's blood during surgery.
Electrocautery -- uses heat to stop vessels from bleeding during surgery.
Hyperbaric chamber -- is a special chamber that helps the body absorb more oxygen into its tissues before and after surgery, speeding the healing process.
Skin monitor -- tracks oxygen levels in the skin during surgery which helps monitor the patient's overall well-being.
Synthetic erythropoietin -- is a hormone used prior to surgery that stimulates the patient's bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. This has the beneficial effect of boosting the patient's hemoglobin level before surgery.
Volume expanders -- are fluids administered intravenously to dilute the blood. Because it is "watered down," each ounce of blood contains a lower concentration of red blood cells, and the amount of red blood cells lost is reduced.
Micro sampling -- is when very small amounts of blood are taken for testing, rather than the larger quantities routinely drawn.
